Long’s Outpost Inc. opened its doors in November of 1989, as a family owned and operated hardware store. The first location, in Martinsburg, PA, began with a single building, a little over 3,000 square feet. Terry Long Sr started Long’s, with intentions of having a local variety store in Martinsburg, PA, offering tools for the working man. He offered hand and power tools, chain binders and a small gift section.
The owners, Beth and Terry Long Sr, ran and operated the business with the help of their family. Terry worked at their excavating business during the day, while Beth ran the office, at both T.L Long Excavating and Long’s Outpost Inc. In the summer of 1992, Beth developed cancer and tragically died in December of 1992. That is when Michael Snyder, Beth’s brother, began to manage Long’s. Melody (Long) Robison started working at the family business after graduating in 1997. In 2005 Terry Long Sr made both Michael Snyder and Melody Robison part owners of the business. Terry Long Sr was site building on Rt 96 in 2007, when he realized that area needed a Long’s Outpost. On June 2, 2007 they opened their second location in New Paris, PA.
Over the past 20years, Long’s have expanded tremendously, adding both sporting goods and archery departments. Long’s boasts one of the largest used rifle and shotgun inventories. Their customers praise the huge selection of trapping, muzzleloader and reloading supplies. Long’s archery department features a knowledgable technition, available for information amd repairs.Through the years, the company expanded into the vast sections of what now is Long’s Outpost, Martinsburg, PA. Long’s now covers over 17,000 square feet, stocking a variety of items in each department, including hand tools, power tools, hardware, electrical, plumbing, truck and trailer supplies, welding, country gifts and more.
The latest addition was in March 2017, when Long’s added a lumber department, that is competitive in both quality and price. They pride themselves in having what you want at a very competitive price with friendly, knowledgeable staff, to help with any project! Mike Snyder’s favorite quote is “Having what you need, when you need it.” If we don’t have it, we’ll get it within a couple days. When you walk into the doors, free coffee is offered and you are greeted by a friendly staff member. Long’s looks forward to adding more stores in central PA. The future goals are to build a larger presence through advertising, social media and a new improved website, better serving the public through convenient, home on-line sales and a mail order service. Long’s supports all area youth, sports and farming organizations as well as local charities.
